The New Royales
Today b/w The Visit [She Was Here] (7" - Black Vinyl)
Limited to 300 Units Pressed On Black Vinyl
The New Royales (Chin, Eric, Liz and DJ Khalil) are a collective that walks the line between writing team and band. While most of their output is the former, with credits for Eminem, 50 Cent, Jay Electronica, Bishop Lamont, Pink and the Clipse, the latter is our focus at GP. Namely, their 2014 mixtape “Freedom’s for the brave”: a collection of re-interpretations that act as a tribute to their diverse musical influences. We’ve plucked two joints from said tape to be immortalized on 45.
The first is a cover of a cover, a drum-forward, contemporary take on Tom Scott’s “Today” (itself a cover of a Jefferson Airplane song) complete with iconic horn solo. The flip is an unusual but welcome choice: their version of “The Visit” from The Cyrkle, a song that ended up on the public radar because of its ingenious use by the late Jay Dee aka J Dilla. TNR proves both songs are worthy of more than just sample fodder and we at GP had little choice but to wholeheartedly agree.
Limited to 500 copies in black vinyl, limited purple variant and test press.
